Roger Kromko

Roger Kromko, Combat Engineer, '67-68 I was a combat engineer with all 3/5 companies. When they said, "Engineer up!" I was there at point looking at some type of booby trap or bomb. I was on 10 ops including UNIONS I and II, and went into Hue with elements of Lima 3/5.

I was in the same firefight during SWIFT with Mike Co. when the Catholic priest (Father Capodanno) got hit. I had a big KC on the side of my helmet which stood for Kansas City.

At the beginning of April 1968, I was assigned to 2/27 who just arrived incountry. They needed veteran combat engineers. I thought they were new guys, but most of the Marines were on their second tour. I went back to the World in May 1968. My nickname was "Sapper."
